The latest offering from Osgood Perkins does not disappoint. Following a family that comes into contact with a mysterious childlike toy, that bewilderingly odd, drum pounding monkey in the previews and marketing, we see traumas unfold and story buildup that serves the rest of the movie. The story focuses on Bill and Hal, two very different brothers, with near opposite sensibilities.
The film is broken up into two parts, the sordid events from their childhood and back to present day. Neither lingers too long and the movie does a good job of keeping the story and the action going
More shock and awe that scares, “The Monkey”’is a blood drenched surprise that manages to pull at the heart strings as much as it does the arteries. With some truly fun and inventive kills, I was laughing as much as I was gasping, which for me really is the sign of a great movie.
Based on a short story by Stephen King, “The Monkey” is campy horror at its best. When you hear that familiar music and watch in anticipation of its left arm quivering before the drumstick comes crashing down, just know that bloodshed is coming and it is gloriously fun.
We rate this one 🔪🔪🔪1/2 out of four.
